HICKMAN, Ky. (AP) — Commercial trucks aren’t being allowed on a western Kentucky ferry that is the only direct route between Kentucky and Missouri, meaning a detour of as much as 80 miles for vehicles traveling between the two states.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the Dorena-Hickman Ferry restriction was prompted by low water on the Mississippi River. The ferry is allowing passenger vehicles and small utility trucks but not commercial trucks or larger vehicles.
The cabinet says the water level at Cairo, Ill., was 8 feet Thursday morning, and the ferry won’t accept the larger vehicles until it reaches about 13 feet.
The ferry connects Kentucky 1354 at Hickman with Missouri Route A and Route 77 near Dorena, Mo.
Missouri and Kentucky are the only border states not connected by road or bridge.
