Skyhawk volleyball success short-lived

UT Martin fell in four sets (26-24, 19-25, 18-25, 19-25) to visiting Southeast Missouri in Ohio Valley Conference volleyball action Tuesday night at Skyhawk Fieldhouse.
UTM (10-19, 6-9 OVC) was led offensively by sophomore Allie Whimpey’s 11 kills and .261 attack percentage. Emily Keaton and Shelby Hoskins also each tallied eight kills while Amanda Crask handed out a match-high 41 assists for the Skyhawks.
Kasey Elswick’s 30 digs led four Skyhawks who cracked double-digits in the digs category.
Chelsea Bowles registered 17 digs while Keaton (11 digs) and Crask (12 digs) helped UT Martin scoop up 88 digs in four sets.
Keaton’s four kills led the Skyhawks in the first set, while Crask (13 assists) and Elswick (10 digs) posted impressive performances as well.
Simons picked up four kills in the second set, while Elswick (10) and Bowles (eight) combined for 18 of the team’s 31 digs in the set.
UT Martin was within four points on two occasions (20-16, 22-18) late in the third set but could not catch up with the Redhawks.
Whimpey piled up five kills in the third set, while Crask accumulated 11 assists.
Hoskins, Whimpey, Harter and Hazelwood all reached three kills apiece in the fourth set for UT Martin.
The Skyhawks close out the regular season on Saturday with a home matchup against Jacksonville State at 2 p.m.
