A Union City man was arrested for simple possession of drugs after a traffic stop on Friday.
Joel M. Ellegood, 23, of 1796 East Highway 22, Union City, was stopped on East Reelfoot Avenue when an officer noticed his vehicle’s headlight was out.
Ellegood could not show proof of insurance and did not have his driver’s license. A check using his Social Security number showed his driver’s license had been suspended for failure to satisfy citations, according to a Union City Police Department report. The officer noted in the report he smelled what he believed to be marijuana.
When the officer placed Ellegood under arrest for driving on a suspended license, he asked if he had anything on his person or in his vehicle and he responded by saying there was nothing, but changed his answer when the officer asked him if he was sure.
The officer then found a bag of marijuana under the driver’s seat and another under the front passenger seat. The marijuana weighed 4.7 grams.
He was charged with simple possession/casual exchange.
