UTM hosting MCU
for fall baseball
The UT Martin baseball team hosts its only exhibition date of the fall on Saturday when it takes on Mid-Continent University at Skyhawk Field.
A pair of seven-inning games will be played beginning at noon.
UT Martin returns 25 players (14 position players, 11 pitchers) from last season’s squad and welcome nine newcomers in 2013. Nine Skyhawks started in at least half of the games in which they appeared in last season, while the pitching staff returns seven hurlers who logged at least 14 appearances in 2012.
Skyhawk head coach Bubba Cates enters his 15th season at the helm of the UT Martin baseball program and 23rd season overall as a collegiate baseball coach.
Mid-Continent, an NAIA school located just up the road in Mayfield, competes in the TranSouth Conference. Head coach Shawn Yarbrough enters his fifth season in charge of the Cougar program.
tune up for OVC
UT Martin’s cross country teams competed in their final tune-up for the OVC championships last weekend at the FrontRunner Invitational held at Moccasin Bend.
The Skyhawk men posted a total time of 1:23.58 in the 5000 meter run, while the UT Martin women’s squad tallied a total time of 1:17:02 on the two-mile course.
Justin Morgan (16:29.37) and Tallon Scott (16:30.58) slotted back-to-back finishes for the Skyhawks, followed by Ryan Pett (16:51.98) and Josiah Roberts (17:01.17).
Amanda Wardlaw paced the UT Martin women’s team with a time of 12:20.27, followed closely by Hannah Wolters (12:25.29). Samantha Hunt ran a strong 12:39.58, while Alexandra Stover (13:02.92) and Kaycee Grimes (13:10.59) finished within eight seconds of each other.
UT Martin returns to action on Oct. 27 for the OVC Championships, located at Oxford Lake Park in Oxford, Ala. The women’s race is scheduled to begin at 9:15 a.m., followed by the men’s race at 10 a.m.
UTM tennis squad
competes in Memphis
UT Martin was one of four tennis teams to compete in the Memphis Fall Invitational this past weekend at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
Host Memphis (Conference USA), Drake (Missouri Valley Conference) and Loyola Marymount (West Coast Conference) joined the Skyhawks.
The Skyhawks battled Loyola Marymount in singles play on Friday.
The Skyhawks were responsible for a trio of close matches in Saturday doubles against Memphis, but couldn’t pull off a victory.
On Sunday, UT Martin was matched up against Memphis in singles.
Sunday’s doubles slate paired UTM against Drake and Loyola.
