They’ll be struttin’ their stuff when the music begins Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Hampton Centré on West Reelfoot Avenue in Union City.
Ten to 15 two-person dance teams will be vying for the honor of being the area’s best at the upcoming Dancing With the Stars fund raiser to benefit Boys & Girls Club in Union City.
Tickets for the inaugural event are on sale at Suedell’s in downtown Union City and will also be available at the door for $20. Cocktail attire is recommended for the opportunity to see well-known area personalities put their best feet forward on behalf of the local organization that provides a safe and nurturing atmosphere for the city’s children and youth.
Couples signed up to take part say they are taking their commitments seriously and are practicing with dance instructors such as ballroom dancer Charlene Fowler to get ready for the competition. In addition, they are appealing to their friends, family and neighbors to support them, not only by attending the event, but by pledging toward their efforts. Each team has been asked to raise a minimum of $2,500 in sponsorship funding.
Similar contests across the country have proven to be great entertainment and fun for not only the dancers but the fans who come to cheer them on.
Couples who have already signed up to take part include Clay Woods and Keisha Hooper, Selena and Tyler Barker, Cristina Grimm and Blake Dunn, Nancy Jo Yarbrough and Rich Robinson, Tammy Sparks and Jamie Worrell, DeLinda Goad and Jonathan Johnson, Abby Roney and Devin Burnside and Jared Hamlin and Angie Morrow.
Dancers have been asked to prepare two songs of their choice. Judges Sacchi Doss and Johnny McIlwain will watch each of the teams perform to their first song and then cut the contestants down to three couples, who will be expected to offer a different dance routine to a new song. During the final round, some surprises are planned and the audience will be able to express their opinions with cash votes.
Emcees for the event will be Jason Kizer and Ali (Shumate) Fowler. Vencent Bell, Portis Tanner, Clint Joiner and Kay Wilkes will be welcoming guests for the evening.
Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served by Sassafraz Catering and there will be a cash bar.
