The ladies from Louisiana are back in Obion County for the latest Masquerade Theatre production of “Steel Magnolias.”
The comedy – drama play, written by Robert Harling, has been double-cast and has two separate directors.
Masquerade Theatre veteran director and performer Linda St. Clair is serving as executive director for the production, taking Jonathan Johnson and Brian Johnson under her wings and teaching them the art of directing.
“There are two separate casts, with two separate directors who have them moving differently on stage. So it will be fun for the public to see both casts perform,” she said.
“Steel Magnolias” takes place in Truvy’s beauty salon and is about the women who regularly gather there. When the show opens, Truvy has just hired Annelle, a new girl in town. It’s a big day as Shelby is getting married and Truvy has been tasked to style her hair, baby’s breath included, for the big day. All the action takes place at Truvy’s, including the ladies learning that Shelby has decided to have a baby, despite her having Type 1 diabetes and the complications that result.
In addition to Truvy, Annelle and Shelby, the characters also include M’Lynn, Shelby’s mother; Clairee, the town’s former first lady and soon-to-be radio station owner; and Ouiser, a rich, but bitter woman.
The cast being directed by Brian Johnson will open the show on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and will also perform Saturday and Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. That cast includes Catherine Nailling as Truvy, Macy Thompson as Annelle, Jenny Gilliland as Clairee, Stephanie McClanahan as Shelby, Lori Suiter as M’Lynn and Connie Norman as Ouiser.
The cast being directed by Jonathan Johnson will perform Friday, Oct. 11 and Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. That cast includes Sharmin Moss as Truvy, Anna Oliver as Annelle, Sacchi Doss as Clairee, Maggie Olmstead as Shelby, Linda Simrell as M’Lynn and Jan Kizer as Ouiser.
Ms. St. Clair and the directors are producing the show. Bob Elderkin is serving as technical director and is in charge of lights and sound. Elderkin, Ron Bloebaum, Larry Buckles, Ralph Gilliam, Gerry Hart, Rob Joyner and Dana Goodman constructed the set. The set was decorated by Tara Tubbs and Kerri Benthal, who have also been in charge or props and stage management. Serving as prompters are Sarah Schlager, Ms. Benthal, Ms. Tubbs and Aaron Scott. The cast members have provided the costumes.
Tickets are available in advance from Sandra Harris at Lanzer Printing and Office Supply Co. for $10 each. Carolyn Bloebaum and Jeannine Cranford will also be selling tickets at the door.
