Union City’s first volleyball season enjoyed another first on Tuesday — a win.
The Lady Tornadoes claimed a 3-2 (22-25, 25-12, 25-20, 22-25, 15-7) win over Gibson County at the Lady Pioneers’ gymnasium.
“Every one of these girls earned this win,” UC head coach Angie Searcy said. “For the most part, they worked together as a team, called plays and encouraged each other. These girls have come a long way in just 21⁄2 half months. It’s been tough and stressful at times, but the win made it all worth it.”
After suffering a tough loss in the first set, Union City rallied for its first-ever set triumph and grabbed a 2-1 match lead by holding off Gibson County in the third set.
Gibson County evened the count with a fourth-set win, but then UC took control in the fifth and deciding set to finish off the win.
“Everyone had a chance to play,” Searcy said. “Because of the leads we had and the way the team was playing together, I had a chance to mix up the players on the court to give everyone an opportunity for some playing time.”
UC put up its most playable serves of the season with Raven Fair and Brittany Parker leading the team with four aces each.
Sadie Hollis, D’Leshae Olds and Halle Kennedy each had three aces, while Hollis, a setter, had nine set passes to her teammates.
Olds had two kills in the fourth set, while Fair had one in the second set and Alexis Coleman had one in the third set.
Coleman and Olds each earned a block as well.
Fair led the Lady Twisters with 12 digs, while Hollis and Molly Maclin had 11, and Kennedy added 10 digs.
Union City (1-10) will travel across the border into Kentucky twice this week, first to Hickman County on Thursday for junior varsity and varsity play beginning at 6 p.m. and then to Graves County on Saturday for an all-day tournament.
The Lady Twisters will then close the 2012 season Monday at home against Madison Academic at 5 p.m.
“We have a few matches left this season, and I feel the girls will use this win to help keep their heads up and play harder,” Searcy said.
