commits to Memphis
Obion County Central standout post player Brandi Goodman has decided to continue her basketball career at the University of Memphis.
A senior this season, Goodman helped lead the Lady Rebels to the Class AA State Tournament last season, where OC reached the championship game before falling to Christ Presbyterian Academy.
She averaged 19 points and 16 rebounds a game last season, earning All-District 13AA regular season and tournament honors along with All-Region 7AA Tournament, All-State and All-State Tournament accolades.
Central has set a school record for wins each of the last two seasons.
slated in Union City
Union City will host a pair of tennis tournaments in the next several weeks, both to be played at the Union City Courts adjacent to the middle school.
The Northwest Tennessee Open Tennis Tournament is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, while the United Way Fall Tennis Tournament will be held Oct. 5-7.
The Northwest event, sponsored by the Union City Civitan Club, will have several singles and doubles categories for boys, girls, women and men with a mixed doubles bracket as well.
The United Way event will have many of those same divisions. Entry fee is $20 per person for every event entered, with players limited to two events.
Entries should be sent to David Harris at 1601 West Reelfoot Ave., Union City, by 5 p.m. Oct. 1.
‘Pop’ best team
Poplar Meadows Country Club held its weekly men’s scramble Wednesday with the winning team shooting 8-under par.
Members of the winning team included Matt Russell, Robert Huffstutter, Rick Smith, Bruce Culver and Rodger Tanner.
Finishing in second at 7-under par was the team of Houston Haag, Sid Chappell, Tony Robinson, Tiger Haag and Jim Baker.
The scramble, which is $10 for members and $15 for non-members, includes the 9-hole event and dinner afterward.
It begins at 5:30 p.m. each Wednesday and participants are encouraged to call the club by 5:15 each week. For more information, call 885-3650.
