Members of Lael Sunday School Class met recently at the Union City First Baptist Church family life center for their regular monthly meeting. Faye Passmore, assistant outreach leader, opened the meeting by asking for prayer for the sick. Several names were mentioned and Joyce Stephens, the teacher, led in prayer.
The class voted to give a donation to the Tennessee Boys’ Ranch in Memphis.
Class members elected new officers for the next year. These include outreach leader Mrs. Passmore, assistant outreach leader Dot Capps, treasurer Pat Cunningham, secretary Lena Mai Pruitt, assistant secretary Dorothy Rasberry, devotional leader Louise Petty and reporter Mrs. Passmore. Jean Eaker will be in charge of sending cards.
Ms. Capps gave the devotional taken from Jeremiah 18, which reflects on joy that has flown away and grief that has settled on the writer, causing a heart that is sick.
Verse 19 deals with the words of Jeremiah, the words of the people and the works of God. In the first part of the verse, Ms. Capps pointed out, the prophet identified with those whom he called “my people.”
From the beginning of the covenent of God with Israel, God told the people that idolatry was a serious sin, but Israel continued this and other sins until God let them reap what they had sown, she said.
Those that were present were Ms. Capps, Mrs. Stephens, Trudy Thornton, Ms. Eaker, Ms. Cunningham, Edna McIntosh, Ms. Pruitt, Lucille Petty and Mrs. Passmore.
The hostess, Ms. McIntosh, served ice cream, cake, nuts and drinks.
Ms. Eaker will be hostess at the next session.
