A Union City woman and her mother apparently have fallen victim to a scam.
Police spoke Monday with a 45-year-old woman who said she had received an out-of-state check for $2,450 on Saturday from a man. She went to a local bank to cash the check and was told it was no good, according to a Union City Police Department report.
The woman said the check was from a man who was supposed to be in the military and allegedly had sold a house in Arkansas and was sending her money. A police officer asked the woman if she knew him and she said only from the Internet, but not face to face.
According to the report, the woman said her mother had sent $3,000 to the man by Western Union overseas in July.
Police said at this point, it appears the woman’s mother was involved in a scam. Police advised her to get rid of the check and not to send money to people she and her mother don’t know. It is likely the money is gone due to being sent overseas, police reported.
