Weekend work earns Hillcrest runner-up

Hillcrest placed second in the Obion County Middle School Invitational Softball Tournament over the weekend.
The Lady Cougars (6-2) beat two separate teams from Gibson County and Ridgemont before losing to Crockett County in the finals.
McClain Bell went 8-for-11 in the event to pace H’crest batters, while Macey Cox struck out 26 opposing hitters while pitching in all four games.
Hillcrest is back in action again today, hosting Ridgemont at 5 p.m.
The other game on today’s slate has South Fulton playing at Martin.
The following is a recap of the Lady Cougars’ weekend games.
Hillcrest 4, GC (1) 2
Bell doubled and tripled to pace the offense.
Olivia Matherly drove in a pair of runs for the victors.
Cox was the winning pitcher with nine strikeouts, two walks and five hits allowed.
Hillcrest 6, R’mont 2
Cox went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Bell had two hits in three at-bats.
Mari Hannah Short went 2-for-3 with a pair of ribbies to aid the winning cause.
Cox fanned seven, walked two and gave up seven hits to earn the pitching triumph.
Hillcrest 11, GC (2) 2
Lauren Ivy carried the big stick with three base knocks to help the Lady Cougars reach the finals.
Bell and Kaitlyn Caldwell both went 2-for-2 with a RBI each.
Caldwell, Ivy and Cox combined for the pitching win with Cox whiffing five batters.
CC 6, Hillcrest 2
Bell had two hits in the finale and was the only Lady Cougar with multiple hits.
Cox was tagged with the pitching loss after giving up nine hits and a walk. She struck out four.
