NASA INTERN — After graduating with honors from the University of Tennessee at Martin in the spring of 2012 with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree, Matthew Fitzgerald of Sharon finally got to fulfill his childhood dream of working for NASA. As a summer intern in the NASA Optics Division, Fitzgerald worked on a Point Design Trace Study to determine how design and thermal changes affect the mirror characteristics of a space telescope. After his internship was completed, he was awarded third place from a pool consisting of 78 engineers for his work and $500. NASA representative Arthur Gene Goldman presented the check. Fitzgerald is currently continuing his education, working to obtain his PHD in engineering from the University of Illinois. Published in The WCP 9.6.12
