Dresden began the 2012 season pretty close to where it ended 2011.
The Lions check in as the No. 6 team in the first Associated Press high school football poll of the season.
Coming off a season where it advanced to the Class 2A state championship game, Dresden is off to a fast start this year with wins over a pair of Class 3A programs — 14-12 over Westview and 41-7 over Gibson County last week. The Lions will play McKenzie this weekend.
Dresden received a first-place vote, one of five teams in the poll with a vote for the top spot, and had 78 total points.
Adamsville, which lost to the Lions in the semifinals last season, is ranked 10th, while two other teams on Dresden’s road trip through the playoffs — Humboldt and McKenzie — received votes despite their respective 0-2 and 0-1 starts to the season.
Friendship Christian, the team that defeated Dresden in the state title game last season, is ranked No. 2 in the double-A poll. FCA actually received the most first-place votes in the poll with nine but finished one point behind Grace Christian (157-156).
Grace received five first-place votes.
Boyd-Buchanan is third, followed by Trousdale County and Cascade. Oneida is eighth, and Houston County is ninth.
Across the state, the No. 1-ranked teams include: Maryville in Class 6A, Knoxville West in 5A, Giles County in 4A, CAK in 3A, South Pittsburg in 1A and Ensworth in Division II. Published in The WCP 8.28.12
