Press football section
again bigger, better

Bigger and better than ever … again.
A year after totally revamping its preseason football publication, The Weakley County Press is at it again this year.
Expanded to 20 pages in the broadsheet format, the preseason section will be included in Tuesday’s newspaper.
The preps-only section will feature expanded coverage of the county’s four teams as well as previews on the three districts with local connections.
A feature on the comings and goings in the coaching ranks is included.
The popular block schedule is also included, with the added bonus of a West Tennessee map to quickly locate the region’s football hotbeds.
The bigger-and-better section looks to improve on last year, which was judged best in the state by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association.
Again this year, the county’s junior high programs — with previews — will be included in the daily sections.
As the college season draws nearer, The Press will also give readers a detailed look at the UT Martin program while also taking glances inside the Ohio Valley Conference.

Martin youth football
offering flag leagues

The Martin Youth League Football program is expanding to offer flag football this year for first-, second-, and third-grade boys and girls.
NFL FLAG Powered by USA Football provides opportunities for children to enjoy America’s favorite sport. Players benefit by being physically active through non-contact, continuous action while learning the fundamentals of football, lessons in teamwork and sportsmanship.
NFL FLAG is powered by USA Football and is also part of the NFL Play 60, the League’s Youth health and fitness campaign. This program promotes physical fitness by getting youth active for 60 minutes a day.
Forms and money to participate in the program can be dropped off at The Sideline, located on Oxford Street in downtown Martin. The cost per player is $50. Each child will receive an official reversible jersey, and official flag belt and a flag.
The deadline to register is Saturday.
Contact The Sideline at 587-3422 for more information.

‘Zombies’ 5K, 1K
slated for Martin

The Run With Zombies 5K and 1K kids run is scheduled for 9 a.m. Oct. 6  at the Martin Recreation Complex.
All proceeds will go to the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of past UT Martin women’s basketball player and Tennessee head coach Pat Summitt.
Registration will be at 8 a.m., followed by the zombie run/walk at 9. The mini monster 1K will follow the 5K.
Entry fees for the 5K are $15 before Sept. 21 and $20 after that date, while the mini monster fees are $8 and $12 before and after Sept. 21, respectively.
There are $50 silver sponsorships and $100 gold sponsorships as well as advertisement and age division sponsorships available.
The event will be conducted by Behavioral Healthcare Center and local healthcare providers.
