A Union City man was charged with drug offenses Friday afternoon following a traffic stop in Martin.
Audare D. Lee, 19, was arrested about 12:30 p.m. on charges of Schedule VI drug violations and unlawful drug paraphernalia after a police officer initially observed a maroon 1997 Ford Thunderbird traveling west on Main Street in Martin with a brake light out, according to a Martin Police Department report.
The officer checked the vehicle registration and the tag came back on a different vehicle, a green Buick LLF. He stopped it in the rear parking lot of Regions Bank.
The officer said upon approaching the vehicle and coming in contact with the driver, he could smell “an overwhelming odor of marijuana” coming from the vehicle. When he asked the driver about the odor, he allegedly indicated he had smoked marijuana earlier. The officer asked the driver if there was any marijuana in the vehicle and the driver allegedly stated there was not and that the officer could search.
According to the report, the officer asked the driver to step from the vehicle and, during a search, a plastic bag containing a green plant-like substance believed to be marijuana fell from him. He was placed under arrest.
The officer reported he also found in the driver’s possession a marijuana blunt inside a cigar package, as well as a glass smoking pipe under the driver’s seat. Police said the substance believed to be marijuana had a combined weight of about 4.2 grams, according to the report.
