Leonard Maxel Merritt, 90, of Martin died Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at his residence.
Services were held at noon Saturday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Martin with Rev. Bruce McCaleb officiating. Burial was in Cates Cemetery, Martin with Murphy Funeral Home of Martin in charge of the arrangements.
Duane Merritt, Gerald Merritt, Chris Merritt, Kyle Merritt, Jason Merritt and Billy Hodges served as pallbearers.
Merritt was born Feb. 23, 1922, in Sturgis, Ky., son of the late Joseph and Hattie Starkey Merritt.
He was the widower of Gaynell Peery Merritt. Before retirement he owned and operated Merritt Motors with his brother, Joe Merritt. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mildred Jean Sheridon Merritt of Martin; two sons, Duane (Linda) Merritt and Gerald (Glenda) Merritt, both of Martin; one daughter, Gwen Hodges of Martin; five grandchildren, Billy Hodges, Mike Merritt, Jason Merritt, Kyle Merritt and Chris Merritt; seven great-grandchildren, Adison Hodges, Samantha Merritt, Hannah Merritt, Natalie Merritt, Darlen Merritt, Grace Ann Merritt and Jack Merritt; and two great-great-grandchildren, Colton Merritt and Case Merritt.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Joe Merritt; and five sisters, Mable Penick, Bertha Merritt, Helen Merritt, Charlene Merritt and Mary Emma McDavid.
