FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Dozens of Kentucky elementary schools will be able to offer more fresh produce to children in the coming school year with $2.7 million in federal funds through the federal Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program.
The Kentucky Education Department says the program provides all children in participating schools with a variety of free fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the school day.
The program is implemented through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Each of the 125 participating schools will receive funds to operate the program based on approximately $53 per student enrolled.
The Education Department says the schools were chosen based on applications from elementary schools that operate the National School Lunch Program and have half or more of their students eligible for free or reduced-price meals.
