The Ohio Valley Conference will begin a year-long celebration of the 40th anniversary of Title IX beginning in July.
With the support of the league’s directors of athletics and presidents, the celebration will include the involvement of both the conference office and the member institutions.
The OVC plans to feature a former student-athlete, coach or administrator that has had a positive impact on women’s intercollegiate athletes from each school. Each individual will also be honored at a home athletic event on their campus.
“The OVC has a rich history of women’s athletics along with a bright future thanks to the commitment, passion and contribution of the trailblazers the conference is honoring as part of its Title IX celebration.” said Beth DeBauche, OVC Commissioner. “It is important during this anniversary year that we take time to appreciate the progress that has been made on the playing fields and in the classrooms as a result of the adoption of Title IX and commit to ensuring students of either gender are not subject to any sort of discrimination under any education program or activity.”
Title IX is a portion of the Education Amendments of 1972 and states:
“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity.”
