An undercover sting operation launched by the Obion Police Department about four months ago has resulted in the arrest of 17 suspects, according to Obion Police Chief Royce Aker.
He told The Messenger early today the arrests were made over the weekend with the assistance of the Obion County Sheriff’s Department. There are still four more warrants to be served in connection with the drug sting operation.
Aker was at the Obion County Law Enforcement Complex this morning questioning some of the suspects.
Those arrested are facing a variety of drug-related charges. Some of the suspects were scheduled to be arraigned before General Sessions Judge Jimmy Smith at 1 p.m. today while others will be arraigned in Obion County Circuit Court Friday.
The names of the suspects arrested in the sting operation, and their charges, are expected to be released Tuesday.
“We knew we had a drug problem in Obion and we needed to work on it,” Aker told The Messenger today.
A majority of those arrested were from the Obion area, according to Aker, who said some of the suspects were from Union City, South Fulton and the Hornbeak area.
The sting operation involved controlled buys of illegal drugs, which were documented in order to come up with the charges and the arrest warrants.
“This definitely isn’t the end of it,” Aker said. “We hope this sends a message that if you’re selling drugs, you’d better look over your shoulder.”
Aker’s statement was supported by Sheriff Jerry Vastbinder. Published in The Messenger 6.11.12
