Retired teachers hold luncheon Posted: Friday, June 8, 2012 8:01 pm Members of the Obion County-Union City Retired Teachers Association recently met at Sassafraz Restaurant for their May luncheon. President Alice Fennel called the meeting to order with the “Pledge to the U.S. Flag.” Ina Orsborne read the minutes. Gloria Howell gave the treasurer’s report. Mrs. Fennel reported on the Jackson meeting. The Rev. Vann Kissell of Troy Baptist Church gave the devotional. Mary Dunavant read a thank-you note from the Boys & Girls Club for the art supplies. Members signed six cards for the sick and deceased members’ families. Members will be asked to bring one peanut butter and two Span or Treet for the August meeting. Money for supplies for the Union City Safeline was taken up. The hostess, Jettie Huff, decorated and had a cake celebrating the 50th year of the Obion County-Union City Retired Teachers’ Association. A scholarship was presented by Doris Milner to Angela Brooks from South Fulton High School. She is the daughter of Kevin and Melissa Brooks of South Fulton. Miss Brooks plans to attend the University of Tennessee at Martin and major in education. Guest speaker was Union City School System Director of School Gary Houston. Houston started his teaching career at South Fulton in the Obion County system. For the past 15 years, he has been in the Union City system as director of schools. He told the group of the things which have been accomplished during the past 15 years, which were many. Houston has worked with all the retired teachers who in the luncheon. He has brought the Union City system into the 21st century with the help of his teachers, school board and the community.
