Staff Reporter
A day filled with activities has been planned for Samburg Annual Community Involvement Day Saturday in Samburg City Park.
The one-day event is part of an ongoing push for tourist development in the town.
The celebration will begin at 10 a.m. with live music and the opening of the concession stand near the ballpark off Reelfoot Avenue.
There will be a chili cook-off, with judging to begin at 1 p.m. The first place winner will earn $50 in cash, with $25 going to the second place finisher and $15 for the third place entry. Those planning on entering the contest are being asked to submit their entries in a non-returnable container so the chili can be auctioned off later in the day.
Judging will begin at 2 p.m. for an adult cake baking competition. Organizers are encouraging those planning to enter the competition to submit their entries in non-returnable containers, so the cakes can be auctioned off. The top three entries in the competition will earn cash awards of $25, $15 and $10, respectively.
Judging for a young ladies cake baking competition will begin at 3 p.m., with ribbons to be awarded to the top three entries.
The cake and chili auction will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the park.
There will also be an inflatable castle set up in the park and children will be allowed to bounce around at no charge.
There will be a dunking booth set up in all day long in the park with five tickets to be sold for $1.
A five-inning softball game for parents and youngsters will begin at 10 a.m. and medallions will be awarded to the winning teams.
A kids fishing competition will be held from 1-2 p.m. for children ages six to 12. Youngsters should bring their own rod and reel and will be challenged to cast a leaded fishing lure from 15 feet into a tub of water. Silver dollars will be awarded as prizes for the event.
