John Marshall Martin Jr., 94, of Alexandria, Va., died Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga.
Memorial graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at East Side Cemetery in Martin. Friends may assembly at 10:15 a.m.
Martin was born Jan. 4, 1918, son of the late John Marshall Sr. and Lucila Hefley Martin. He attended the University of Tennessee Junior College and graduated from the University of Tennessee Knoxville. During World War II he served as Signal Corps officer in the Navy in the Pacific theatre. His shop participated in the battles for Guam, Saipan and Iwo Jima. Following WWII he returned to UTK where he received his law degree.
From 1956 until his retirement in 1981, he was an attorney with the Committee on Ways and Means of the United State House of Representatives, serving many years as Chief Counsel and Staff Director. In this position he was a primary drafter of many pieces of national legislation. In 1979 he received the John W. McCormack Annual Award of Excellence to Congressional Staff Employees.
Martin was a member of the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church of Alexandria. The King and Queen Rod and Gun Club, the Society of the Cincinnati and other genealogical societies.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Shands Martin of Aiken, S.C.; one son, J. Marshall Martin III of Atlanta, Ga.; one daughter, Dr. Mary Lucila Thompson of Augusta, Ga.; and two grandchildren, Thomas Martin and William Martin.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, William Martin; and one sister, Ann Martin Harpole.
