Skyhawks’ twosome
tabbed best runners Sophomores Colin Johnson and Hannah Wolters, both runners on the UT Martin cross country squad, were named recipients of the team’s Most Valuable Runner awards for the 2012 spring season.
The duo was also named team MVP’s for the 2011 fall season.
A Clarksville native, Johnson competed in four races this spring, notching top-10 performances in three of those. He took part in the 800, 1500, 3000 and 5000 meter runs.
Wolters, from Cull-eoka, was one of the Skyhawks’ best options in the 5000 meters. Competing in three meets, her best finish was second place at the SIU Edwardsville Gateway Meet on April 21.
UT Martin head coach Gordon Sanders also announced that the team continued its strong performances in the classroom during this past semester.
The women’s team averaged a 3.7 Grade Point Average, while the men’s team posted a 3.6 GPA for the spring. All in all, a total of 17 student-athletes made the Dean’s List with five registering a perfect 4.0 GPA.
“What an excellent way to end the season,” Sanders said. “We had the same numbers on the Dean’s List and with 4.0’s in the fall, but now the GPA has gone up. Their effort has been fantastic.” Massachusetts rider
signs with UT Martin Ali Barros, of Medway, Mass., will join the UT Martin equestrian team this fall where she will ride English for the Skyhawks, said UT Martin head equestrian coach Meghan Cunningham.
Barros has received numerous ribbons in equitation and the jumpers at prestigious horse shows from Ocala to Saugerties. She was selected to participate in both the Level 1 and Level II 2011 USHJA Emerging Athletes Program.

Barros, the daughter of Charles and Aggie Barros, rides with Mary Beth McGee of Herring Brook Farm in Pembroke, Mass.
“We’re excited to have Ali join the Skyhawks equestrian team,” Cunningham said. “Her riding experience, her strong academics and her sportsmanship will make her a great fit with our program.” UTM’s Sims named
to Watch List at WR Quentin Sims, the rising senior wide receiver at UT Martin, has been named to the 2012 College Football Performance Award (CFPA) Wide Receiver Watch List.
Sims, from Cincinnati caught 54 passes for 712 yards.
He caught 10 touchown passes and averaged 64.7 yards per game.
Sims was named to the All-OVC second-team offense and he was named an OVC All-Newcomer in 2011.
Sims had his best game of the season at LP Field in Nashville when the Skyhawks played against OVC foe Tennessee State. Sims caught 11 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown. Sims was 46th in the nation for receptions per game with 4.9.
