BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) — The best high school in the country, according to a national news magazine, opened five years ago and is in south-central Kentucky — the Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green.
Last year, the school made the list’s top five. The new rankings in Newsweek’s “America’s Best High Schools 2012” were released Sunday.
Nearly 1,000 U.S. schools are recognized. Also making the list from Kentucky are Louisville Manual at 68th, Fort Thomas Highlands at 235th, Beechwood in Fort Mitchell at 271st, North Oldham in Goshen at 578th, South Oldham in Crestwood at 814th and the J. Graham Brown School in Louisville at 922nd.
Criteria include on-time graduation rate, college acceptance, college entrance test scores and availability of college-level curricula.
