Flag service offered Posted: Tuesday, May 22, 2012 4:02 pm The Messenger, May 22, 2012 Members of Reelfoot Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, as part of the organization’s annual Flag Day observance in June, will be demonstrating how to respectfully destroy worn and tattered American flags. Anyone wishing to have a dilapidated American flag destroyed in a patriotic manner may take the flag to the Obion County Veterans’ Service Office in the Eddie Cox Senior Center at 622 Depot St. in Union City by no later than June 8. If flag owners have a story about their flag and wish it to be told by the participants at the ceremony, they are encouraged to submit a short written statement with the flag. This service is being offered to encourage those who fly the American flag to fly only flags that are in good repair as a sign of respect for the emblem of this great nation and the dear price paid by so many that we might fly it freely. The chapter’s program is also designed to teach the method of flag destruction that signifies the respect due our national emblem and those who sacrificed much for what it represents, a spokesman said. |
