Wags & Whiskers organizers planning membership drive
Staff Reporter
A membership drive for the newly-formed Wags & Whiskers: Safe Haven, Obion County’s animal shelter organization, will kick off June 15. The drive is being promoted to help raise funds for a planned animal shelter.
To date, the animal shelter organization has worked primarily on establishing itself as a legally recognized group. The required paperwork has been filed with the state and the group’s application as an officially recognized agency is being reviewed by the office of the Secretary of the State in Nashville.
Meanwhile, the group is continuing to work on two major goals — identifying a location for an animal shelter and raising enough money to buy and operate the shelter.
The membership drive will help the group with its fund-raising goal.
It was decided at an animal shelter meeting Tuesday night that memberships will be offered on three levels.
An individual membership will be $20, a family membership will be $30 and a business membership will be $50.
Membership forms will be created in time for the group’s next scheduled meeting, which is set for 7 p.m. June 5 at the Obion County Public Library. The forms will be distributed to those involved in the animal shelter effort.
The June 5 meeting is open to the public.
It was pointed out during Tuesday night’s meeting that those who buy a membership in the animal shelter agency will not actually receive anything in return for their investment, other than knowing their financial support will go toward helping establish a much-needed Obion County animal shelter.
Organizers are hoping to locate their planned animal shelter in the area between Union City and Troy, off Highway 51.
Several potential locations have been scouted, but no decision has been made yet on a site.
Also at Tuesday night’s meeting, the animal shelter group agreed upon a new logo designed by local artist Martii Adelle Eakin Doss and decided to set up a booth at the upcoming Obion County Fair.
This year’s fair is scheduled for Aug. 13-18.
