Westview is hoping seven is a lucky number as the Chargers are heading to the Region 7A-AA soccer finals after beating Crockett County 1-0 Thursday night in Dyersburg.
The No. 1 seeded Chargers out of the East Division will take on No. 1 Dyersburg out of the West Division today at 5:30 at Dyersburg Middle School. By making the finals, the Chargers are guaranteed to play in the sectionals. A win against the Trojans would give the Chargers home field advantage in the sectionals on Saturday. A loss would send Westview on the road.
“We are 3-3 in the finals so this is going to be a tie-breaker,” Westview head coach Dan Scates said. “I sure would love to play this one at home, but we are going to be playing the best team that we have faced all year in Dyersburg. They are a team with a lot of seniors and they have played together for a long time.”
To earn that right to play Dyersburg, the Chargers had to beat an undefeated Cavalier team that beat the Chargers 4-1 during the regular season. The only blemish to the Crockett County’s record was a 1-1 tie against Dyersburg.
Crockett County had more possessions in the game than Westview did, but an unrelenting defense kept the Cavaliers scoreless with Westview goal keeper Scout Edwards getting seven saves in the game.
With Westview having so few possessions due to the stingy Cavaliers, the Chargers only made five shots on goal. Adam Reinhard made one at the 9:18 mark in the first half and the defense made sure that score held up.
Nic Fortner took possession of the ball at midfield and saw Reinhard wide open in front of him. He kicked the ball over to Reinhard, who then got to the right side of the circle and fired a perfect kick past the diving Crockett County goal keeper.
The biggest difference in between this game and the earlier loss to the Choctaws was the battle at midfield, which the Chargers controlled for most of the game.
