Nanney, Felts reunion planned

A reunion of the descendants of J.B. “Pomp” and Flarra Felts Nanney is planned for May 25-27. The Nanneys, lifelong residents of the Chestnut Glade/Ruthville community in Weakley County, were the parents of seven children, Minard, Paul, David, Mike, Madge (Conner), Ruth (Miller Mortimer) and Pat.
Descendants include 20 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, with many attending from numerous states. This branch of the Nanney family descends from Daniel Nanney, who was born in Brunswick County, Va., about 1785 and died in Weakley County in 1872. Many planning to attend have not seen one another in more than 30 years; some will be meeting kin for the first time.
Numerous activities are planned throughout the weekend, including a Sunday reunion devotional gathering. In conjunction with the New Hope Cemetery Committee, this devotional gathering will be held at the traditional Nanney/Felts family church, New Hope United Methodist Church on New Hope Lane off Vaughan Road in the Chestnut Glade/Ruthville community. Six generations of the Nanney/Felts family worshipped at the church and are buried there. New Hope Church was organized Nov. 12, 1831, and held its last service June 3, 2001.
The Sunday gathering at New Hope Church will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with fellowship, a devotional service and a cemetery tour of the graves of Nanney/Felts ancestors and descendants.
All friends, neighbors and interested people are invited to attend this service for visiting and renewing old friendships. Those attending are asked to bring chairs, as the church is now empty of pews. Dress should be casual. Anyone needing more information or directions may call (731) 588-1274.
