For the fourth time this season, McKenzie beat Dresden. This time, though, the stakes were much higher.
The Lady Rebels ended the Lady Lions season in the semifinal game of the District 13A Softball Tournament in Gleason with a 5-1 decision.
McKenzie will play Huntingdon for the district title today in Gleason, both teams then advancing to the Region 7A Tournament next week against South Fulton and Union City from 14A.
Dresden beat Bruceton on Tuesday 1-0 behind the pitching of Abigail Lockhart to make into the semifinal game.
It was the second time this week Dresden had to go up against McKenzie. The Lady Rebels got the best of the Lady Lions on Monday 7-0.
Dresden was held scoreless until the top of the seventh inning in Wednesday’s game. Lockhart led off with a base hit to center field. She went to third on an infield hit by Tori Flippin and scored on Taylor McAlpin’s slow roller to third.
Allie Phillips struck out swinging, and Carrie Hatchel popped up to the second baseman to end the game.
The Lady Lions were not without opportunities. They had the bases loaded in the second inning with two outs, but Lockhart grounded out to the third baseman.
Dresden had bases loaded a second time in the third inning, but McKenzie starting pitcher Brooke Baucum got K.J. Smith to hit into a double play to end the inning.
“We have struggled with her (Baucum) all year long,” Dresden skipper Stacey Lockhart said. “She does not throw any faster than anybody else or any different than anybody else. I think for some reason she is in our head.”
Lockhart decided to go with McAlpin on the mound instead of her number one starter, Abigail Lockhart. She felt McAlpin would give the Lady Lions a better chance of winning since the Lady Rebels were so familiar with Abigail.
“Taylor has done very well pitching against them,” Lockhart said. “They have had a hard time hitting her. Our defense has done pretty well every game, but we struggled and had some errors in this game. We went with Taylor because most of the girls over there (McKenzie) play travel ball with Abigail and they have seen her. They are used to her pitching.”
McKenzie scored twice in the first inning on two fielder’s choice plays with the bases loaded. Before they scored, the Lady Lions made two force outs at the plate. The Lady Rebels scored their final three runs in the fourth inning.
Lockhart will be losing five senior starters to graduation — Allie Phillips, Courtney Hornsby, Tori Flippin, Maria Burkeen and Kristen Childress.
“They have come a long way,” Lockhart said. “We have only had them for two years and they have done a really good job the past two years. They are only leaving the team as a whole for something a little bit better that we are going to continue to build on every year.”
The Lady Lions finish the 2012 season 18-10.
Dresden 1, Bruceton 0
Lockhart struck out eight and shut out Bruceton with a two-hitter to send the Lady Lions to the semifinal game of the District 13A Tournament on Tuesday.
Lockhart also had four walks in the game but was able to pitch around them and keep them from scoring.
Hatchel scored Dresden’s only run in the sixth inning. She did not have any official at-bats but reached base twice on a pair of errors.
Phillips and Childress each had two of Dresden’s five hits. Burkeen had the other base hit for the Lady Lions. Published in The WCP 5.10.12
