The Fulton County Sheriff’s Department had received a call about 3:30 p.m. Saturday claiming two men were stealing scrap metal on private property in the Kentucky Bend area. On arrival, deputies observed two men loading scrap metal they had allegedly retrieved from a wooded lot into the back of a pickup truck with the use of a backhoe.
During the investigation at the scene, deputies determined the men did not have permission to be on the property, had stolen the backhoe being used from a construction company in Lake County and were in possession of a controlled substance, according to a sheriff’s department press release.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Department was notified and informed about the Caterpillar backhoe. A deputy who came to the scene contacted the equipment owner, who had no knowledge it had been taken.
A 2000 GMC Sierra pickup truck loaded with scrap metal and the backhoe were seized.
Charges are pending against the men in Lake County for the alleged theft of the backhoe.
The Fulton County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and the Fulton County Detention Center. Sheriff’s officials expressed appreciation to citizens who report any criminal activity they observe.
