Meagan Prince out-pitched Covington’s Autumn Glenn in the stats department, but it was Glenn who got the win in the second round of the District 13AA Tournament on Friday in Dyersburg.
Prince pitched a one-hitter in the 1-0 loss, but it was an error that led to the only run in the game.
Shelby Bolding got Covington’s only hit in the top of the fourth.
Tierra Williams came in to run for her and stole second and then swiped third. A throwing error on the steal allowed her to score.
Westview attempted to overcome the error in the bottom of the inning with Alex Hughey’s leadoff double.
Kayla Bryant moved her over to third with a base hit and Alex Crosser laid down a bunt that Glenn fielded.
She faked a throw over to first and got Hughey trapped going down the third base line and tagged her out.
Bryant got thrown out at the plate as she tried to score on Hailey Coleman’s single to center field.
The Lady Chargers hit the ball hard all night, but Covington’s defense played Westview’s hitters perfectly on several hard-hit balls that were hit right at them.
Prince struck out 13 batters in the tough loss. Shelby and Kayla Guthrie each had a base hit for Westview.
Monday’s tournament games were pushed until today due to the threat of storms and rain in the area. Westview will play Milan in game 14 of the tournament.
The Lady Chargers are in a must-win situation now. One more loss and the Lady Chargers will be eliminated from the tournament and close their season. They must win three more games to make it to the championship game.
