Skyhawks’ season ends with losses

UT Martin jumped on host Jacksonville State with two runs and two hits in the top of the second inning, but that was it in a 10-2 loss Sunday afternoon to close out its softball regular season at Jacksonville, Ala.
Jacksonville State answered with five runs in the bottom of the third inning and five more in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Kayla Wade, Leah Taylor and Becca Will-iams accounted for the Skyhawks’ three hits.
UT Martin finishes the regular season with a 36-19 overall record and a 23-6 Ohio Valley Conference worksheet. The Skyhawks will host the OVC Tournament May 10-12 at Bettye Giles Field in Skyhawk Park and enjoy the No. 1 seed for the second time in three years.
Jacksonville State evened its overall record at 26-26 and finishes with a 19-11 OVC won-loss record. The Gamecocks, the league’s defending tournament champs, will be the No. 3 seed in this year’s tournament.
SATURDAY’S GAMES
UTM 4, Jax State 1
Sophomore Lydia Biggerstaff drove in the Skyhawks’ first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning with a single. Jacksonville State answered in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run.
Senior Chelsea Jones pitched all eight innings. She gave up five hits and two walks. She struck out nine en route to her 25th win of the season.
Jax St. 6, UTM 3
Jacksonville State piled up 11 hits and scored two runs in the first inning and 1 in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. UT Martin spoiled the shutout with one run in the top of the sixth inning.
