A Union City child was taken into custody Thursday afternoon on charges levied through juvenile court after allegedly grabbing at a police officer’s gun and later threatening to hit the officer.
The 10-year-old boy was charged through a juvenile court petition with theft under $500, assault and disorderly conduct after he was found to have a stolen bicycle in his possession, according to a Union City Police Department report.
His name was not disclosed by police because he is a juvenile.
Police had gone to the boy’s home and, while an officer was speaking with the child’s mother, the boy was allegedly bothering the officer’s police dog. When he was told to leave the dog alone, he continued, and then came over to the officer and started touching items on the officer’s gun belt. When told not to do so, the boy allegedly grabbed at the officer’s gun, according to the report.
When he was detained, the child threatened to hit the officer, police reported. The child’s mother told police she has no control over the boy and is afraid of him. She was also charged through juvenile court with parental neglect.
At the police station, the child allegedly yelled at the officer and several others, including investigators and ranking officers, and threatened to hit several people if he was uncuffed.
