Union City was simply perfect.
The Lady Tornadoes claimed the District 14A-AA team championship Wednesday in Dyersburg with a 7-0 win over Halls.
With the win, Union City improves to 15-0 and will play Greenfield, which has won 49 consecutive matches dating back to 2008, for the regional championship 4 p.m. Tuesday at the UC Middle School courts.
Union City continued what has been an overpowering season with its shutout of the Lady Tigers.
In addition to being unbeaten in team play, the Lady Tornadoes are 102-3 in singles and doubles matches. The 7-0 win was the 13th win by that score this season.
UC did not have much resistance, led by Anna Moore’s 8-0 blanking of Haleigh Hurt at the No. 2 singles spot.
Tara Elam had little trouble with Maddie Hutcherson at No. 4, winning 8-1, while No. 1 seed Maddie King and fifth seed Ellen Bearden claimed 8-3 decisions. King knocked off Shelbie Hurt and Bearden defeated Jessie Sorrell.
Jenna Miller put up an 8-5 score on Julie Hill at the third spot.
UC’s toughest test came in doubles where the No. 1 tandem of Moore and Elam won a tiebreaker 7-2 to finally put away the Hurt sisters.
The No. 2 doubles was much less dramatic for Union City as King and Miller easily put away Hill and Hutcherson 8-1.
Prior to next week’s regional team match, Union City will send six girls and six boys into the District 14A-AA singles and doubles tournaments this weekend at the UT Martin courts.
Play will begin at 3:30 on Friday and continue at 4 p.m. Saturday. Action will carry over to Monday, if necessary.
The Twisters have the top-seeded girls’ doubles team and the No. 2-seeded boys duo.
Moore and King will team up for the top doubles spot in girls’ play, while Jacob Triplett and Devin King hold the second spot in the boys’ bracket.
Elam and Miller will team up in girls’ doubles, as will Peyton Cox and Will Thralls in the boys’ bracket.
Bearden and Laura Reed Smith will represent UC’s girls, while Alex Pegram and Ellis Critchlow will play for the Tornadoes in the singles bracket.
