Union City relied on quality rather than quantity at the junior high West Sectional Track Meet Thursday in Memphis.
Taking nine athletes to compete in five boys’ events and also entering in one girls’ event, the middle school Golden Tornadoes placed in all six.
Led by two school-record performances, the UC boys placed in the top 10 among teams with 25 points.
Austin Jefferson’s time of 2:28, breaking his own school mark, was good for fifth place in the 800-meter run, while the 1,600-meter relay foursome of D’Carrius Stephens, Cace Cook, Kaleb Dowell and Brantley Clendenin ran a 3:58 to shatter the previous school record by six seconds, finishing fourth overall.
Willaevion Burton was third in the high jump, as was Tripp Conley in the 3,200 run.
The 3,200 relay quartet of Jefferson, Sam Guess, Jack Guess and Conley placed fifth.
In the girls’ meet, Kendra Young was fourth in the shot put.
The sectional meet closed the book on the 2011-12 athletic year at Union City Middle School.
The school’s spring sports banquet, which will include basketball, is scheduled for Monday night at the high school.
