Senior Graham Sleigh fired a 3-under par 69 in the third round of the Ohio Valley Golf Championship Saturday at GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson to lead UT Martin to a three-round 874 and a fifth-place finish.
“I am not disappointed with our guys,” UT Martin head golf coach Jerry Carpenter said. “I am proud of our guys.”
The Skyhawks opened the tournament with a 290 and then turned in a second-round 293.
Freshman Brendon Caballero finished the three-round tournament at 1-under par (215). He was tied for seventh in the tournament.
Sleigh was even par after three rounds and tied for ninth in the tournament.
Sophomore John Michael Sisinni shot a three-round 217 and was one-over part. He was tied for 11th in the tournament.
Tyler Shellnut shot a three-round 227, while senior Barton Hamilton turned in a three-round 237.
“The way we finished gives us something to build on for next year,” Carpenter said.
Jacksonville State entered the final day of play with a four-shot lead and finished play with a round of 290 to finish the tournament at 861 (-3).
In the process, JSU became the first OVC men’s team to repeat as champions since Austin Peay won three in a row from 2001-03.
Austin Peay (-2) came up just short in the search for its first title since 2009, giving up a stroke to Jacksonville State on the final hole of the championship.
It was the closest finish at the OVC Men’s Golf Championship since Austin Peay edged Murray State by a single stroke in 2009 and marked the sixth time the OVC Championship had been decided by a single stroke (1975, 1980, 1999, 2001, 2009 and 2012).
With the victory, Jacksonville State earned the OVC’s automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The 2012 field will be announced on Monday, May 7 at 8 p.m. on NCAA.com.
The NCAA Regionals will take place May 17-19 and be held at six sites — Greensboro, N.C., Athens, Ga., Ann Arbor, Mich., Bowling Green, Ky., Norman, Okla. and Stanford, Calif. The National Championship will be held May 29 – June 3 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Cal.
Murray State, who was picked eighth in the preseason OVC golf poll, finished in third place overall with a three-round score of 866 (2-over).
The Racers were followed by Eastern Kentucky (+7), UT Martin (+10), Eastern Illinois (+23), Morehead State (+25), Tennessee Tech (+46) and Tennessee State (+47).
The individual medalist race was claimed by Austin Peay sophomore Anthony Bradley who carded a three-round score of 210 (-6).
Murray State junior Patrick Newcomb, who shot a 3-under 213, was voted the OVC Player of the Year. Published in The WCP 5.1.12
