Lady Chargers show tourney form

Both softball teams claimed shutout wins in weekend play, the Lady Chargers blanking Gibson County on Thursday and South Gibson on Friday while Dresden’s Abigail Lockhart led the Lady Lions over Fulton County.
In the District 13AA Tournament, play-in games will be today at the sites of the two higher seeds, and then the double-elimination portion of the bracket will start on Wednesday.
As the top team from its division, Westview will host the Ripley-Gibson County winner at 6 p.m.
Meanwhile, the District 13A Tournament will get started on Thursday. The first round will be single-elimination, and then the four remaining teams will play double-elimination.
Dresden will play West Carroll, and Gleason will take on Huntingdon in the opening round.
Westview 10, GC 0
The bats erupted for the Lady Chargers on Thursday as they pounded out 14 hits with five going for extra bases and Kayla Guthrie’s home run leading the way. She went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Melanie Davis had a triple and two RBIs and Holly Morris also hit a triple with one RBI.
Alex Crosser and Meagan Prince each hit a double for the Lady Chargers. Crosser also knocked in a run.
Kayla Bryant went 3-for-4 and Hailey Coleman went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Prince got the win and pitched a one-hitter. She struck out eight and walked two.
Westview 5, So. Gibson 0
Prince pitched her second shutout in as many days for Westview on Friday with 11 strikeouts and she also went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and knocked in a run.
Crosser and Morris were a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with Crosser getting one RBI.
Kayla Guthrie was 2-for-4 and scored a run for the Lady Chargers.
Westview is now 18-8-1 on the season.
Dresden 15, Fulton Co. 0
Lockhart did it with her bat and her pitching arm Friday in Dresden’s 15-0, three inning win over Fulton County.
Lockhart recorded four hits at the plate and knocked in four runs with her bat. In the pitcher’s circle she allowed only one hit and struck out eight batters.
Tori Flippen had a pair of hits and two RBIs for Dresden. KJ Smith also had two hits and Kristen Childress knocked in a pair of runs.
The Lady Lions will wrap up their regular season today at McKenzie. Published in The WCP 5.1.12
