UC doubles up on high seeds
Union City is hoping to dish out some double trouble. Obion Central will take some success anywhere in the bracket.
The Golden Tornadoes have the top-seeded girls’ doubles team and the No. 2-seeded boys’ duo for the District 14A-AA Tennis Tournament, which begins 3:30 p.m. May 4 at the UT Martin courts.
Anna Moore and Maddie King will team up for the top doubles spot in girls’ play, facing off against a team from Haywood, while Jacob Triplett and Devin King hold the second spot in the boys’ bracket and will play Gunter McCrae and Ryan Harber from Crockett County.
Tara Elam and Jenna Miller are unseeded in the girls’ doubles bracket but should be considered among the top tandems anyway. The pair will play Haleigh Hurt and Julie Hill from Halls in their opening match.
Peyton Cox and Will Thralls round out the Twister boys’ entries in the doubles bracket, slated to meet Nate Adams and Noah Allen of Trenton in the opening round.
With a pair of singles brackets top-loaded with high seeds, Union City’s lower seeded entrants will have their hands full in making a push to keep their postseason going.
Ellen Bearden will take on Rachel Hamm of Trenton, while Laura Reed Smith will face Aura Mae Northcutt of Dyersburg as UC’s openers in the girls’ singles bracket. Alex Pegram will play the winner of the play-in match between Covington’s Dillan Johnson and Dyersburg’s Jesse Cochran, and Ellis Critchlow will face Obion Central’s Austin Riley in boys’ singles.
OC’s other boys’ singles entrant, Dallas Mathis, will play tourney third seed Ross Houghton of Haywood.
The Lady Rebels will send their top two players into the girls’ singles bracket as Marissa Howard will play Laura Ferrer of Westview and Lindsay Castellaw will await the winner between Covington’s Arianna Cullum and Crockett County’s Jennifer Bushart.
In girls’ doubles for OC, Shelly Pate and Taylor Moore will meet Hannah Russell and Lene Schultz of Crockett County, while Kristin Storey and Mallori Conley will play Madison Vaughn and Catherine Moore of Dyersburg.
Central will send only one doubles team into the boys’ bracket as Mason Warren and Klain Davis will be in action.
The girls’ and boys’ district team championship are expected to be played next week prior to the indvidual tournaments.
UC could play either Halls or Haywood on the girls’ side, while the southern half of the league could end in a three-way tie and a playoff.
Union City will host the boys’ and girls’ regionals at two city sites on May 10-11. Published in The Messenger 4.26.12
