Union City has put together a four-game softball winning streak. Unfortunately, head coach Shane Sisco has not witnessed any of those victories. Sisco has twice been hospitalized for meningitis since last Wednesday and remains a patient today in Baptist Memorial-Union City while battling the illness. The coach — who was released from the hospital Friday but readmitted Saturday — will almost certainly miss all of this week’s scheduled games and surely tonight’s Union City High School basketball banquet at the school. Assistant coach Jason Qualls has taken over the day-to-day operations of the Union City softball program and has been assisted by Larry Speed and Brian Conner. The Lady Tornadoes continued their winning ways against Hickman County on Friday, beating the Falcons 8-3 at Graham Park. A district game against visiting Lake County is next up on Union City’s schedule today. UC 8, Hickman Co. 3 Sadie Hollis struck out 11 and gave up just one earned run in notching her 10th pitching victory in 15 decisions. Hollis helped her own cause with a pair of hits and two runs scored for the Lady Tornadoes, who improved to 16-8 with the victory. Brittany Parker had a triple, a double and drove in two runs while also scoring two to contribute to the winning cause. Tory Reedy had a two-base hit and a pair of RBIs. Bettye Claire Beachum also doubled and knocked in a run. Today’s game vs. Lake County will start at 5 p.m. UC also has games scheduled every other day this week, hosting Huntingdon on Tuesday, Gibson County Wednesday and McKenzie on Thursday. The Lady Tornadoes will play at league-league South Fulton on Friday, hoping to forge a tie atop the District 14A standings with a victory. South Fulton won the earlier meeting between the two teams, 11-4 last week at Graham Park. The Devilettes are unbeaten in district play, while UC has been one loss in the league heading into this week’s play. Published in The Messenger 4.23.12 |
