Perfection rewards UC girls

Union City’s girls completed a perfect run to the district championship. The Golden Tornado boys will not make it a school sweep of regular season titles.
The Lady Twisters posted a 7-0 win over Trenton at the Middle School courts on Thursday to clinch the district title and improve to 12-0 on the season.
UC’s boys, meanwhile, suffered a 4-3 defeat and will step aside as the Golden Tide play for a league title.
The Union City girls put up three shutout wins on the way to the team win.
Maddie King and Jenna Miller were involved in all three 8-0 wins, King beating Madison Maitland at No. 1 in singles, Miller winning over Rachel Hamm at No. 3 and the two teaming up to blank Hamm and Mary Gibson at No. 2 doubles.
Anna Moore claimed an 8-1 win over Gibson at the second seed in singles, while Tara Elam beat Holly Johnson and Ellen Bearden stopped Kaitlyn Wallace 8-2.
Moore and Elam won 8-3 over Maitland and Johnson at No. 1 doubles.
Union City came up just short in several boys’ matches, including a loss in a tiebreaker and two setbacks by 8-5 scores.
The Twisters won twice in singles and once in doubles. Devin King defeated Nate Adams 8-5 at No. 3 in singles, and Ellis Critchlow held off Noah Allen 9-7 at No. 5.
Jacob Triplett and Peyton Cox, who suffered losses at the top of the singles ladder, defeated Adams and Drew Butler 8-4 at No. 1 doubles.
Union City’s match against Covington scheduled for today has been canceled.
The Twisters have two matches remaining in the regular season — Monday at home against Milan and Tuesday vs. Obion Central, also at home.
