’Jackets wear down Westview Posted: Friday, April 20, 2012 12:00 pm Being well-rested paid off. Playing its first tennis match in nearly two weeks against a team that had seen plenty of action in the previous several days, Greenfield’s girls squad claimed a 7-0 verdict over Westview at the UT Martin courts on Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Yellowjackets finally got to play a tennis match after a two-week stretch with no matches. Westview, meanwhile, had played on Monday and the previous Thursday. At the top seed, Lady ’Jacket Taylor Hatcher defeated Melissa Darroch 8-2. No. 2 seed Kalee Kester-son of Greenfield beat Laura Ferrer by an 8-3 margin. At No. 3, Greenfield’s Kendal Cook won by a like margin over Westview’s Natalie Hurst, 8-3. Lady Yellowjackets’ Callie Croom doubled Westview’s Jasmine Evans 8-4, while the fifth-seed match was a tight one with Greenfield’s Lauren Rush edging past Westview’s Madison Williams by a 9-7 score. Other singles matches played that had no bearing on the overall match results had Ashton Pence beating Lady Chargers’ Jessica Evans 8-3 at No. 6, No. 7 Westview netter topping Greenfield’s Abby Huffstetler 8-3, and Savannah Ricketts of Greenfield victorious in her No. 8 singles match against Chelsea Thweatt 8-0. In doubles action, Kesterson and Cook won by an 8-1 margin over Ferrer and Darroch in the No. 1 match, while Hatcher and Croom were victorious over Hurst and Evans 8-3 at No. 2. Two more doubles matches were played for experience. At No. 3, Rush and Pence stopped Williams and Evans 8-6, and at No. 4, the Westview duo of Cormia and Thweatt beat Darian Black and Shelby Smith 8-3. Westview is right back in action today against Crockett County at the UTM courts. Greenfield is currently 8-0 and 4-0 in the district. The win over Westview was Greenfield’s 46th regular season victory in a row — a streak that began back in 2008. Greenfield hosts Camden Monday and Huntingdon Tuesday. Published in The WCP 4.19.12 |
