Twister squads nearly flawless in wins

Union City was nearly perfect at Dyersburg.
The Lady Tornadoes posted a team shutout with a 7-0 win, while the UC boys claimed a 6-1 verdict, the only loss coming in a tiebreaker, in prep tennis action on Tuesday afternoon.
Union City will close out this week’s schedule Thursday at home against Trenton, the only district team with a win over OC’s boys. Friday’s match at Covington has been canceled.
UC was stronger at every spot on the girls’ ladder, Tara Elam fighting off Madison Vaughn 8-6 at the fourth seed and Ellen Bearden topping Laurie Williams 8-4 at No. 5.
Maddie King notched the most lopsided singles score with an 8-2 win over Corena Hassell at No. 1, while Anna Moore and Jenna Miller beat Catherine Moore and Aura Mae Northcutt 8-3 at the second and third spots, respectively.
Moore and King teamed for an 8-0 win at No. 1, while Elam and Miller combined for an 8-2 win at No. 2 in doubles.
Devin King had an easy day at No. 3 in boys’ singles with an 8-0 win over Elliot Feith.
Jacob Triplett claimed an 8-4 decision over Josh Williams at No. 1, and Alex Pegram posted an 8-3 decision over Taylor Flatman at No. 4. Ellis Critchlow won by forfeit.
While Peyton Cox suffered a 7-5 loss in the tiebreaker of his match with Jeff Betonio, he teamed with Will Thralls for an 8-3 win in doubles. Triplett and King had an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles.
The Union City teams are a little more than two weeks away from the beginning of the postseason, and have just two remaining regular season matches on their schedule.
The Tornadoes will host Milan on Monday, then entertain county net brethren Obion Central on Tuesday in the final matches of 2012 before tournament play is set to begin.
The University of Tennessee at Martin will again be the site of the district tournament, with first- and second-round matches set for May 4, starting at 1 p.m.
The semifinals and championships will be played the following day, on a Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.
Pairings for the start of the event will be determined by regular season play and announced the week the tournament is set to begin.
The Union City Middle School courts and the Tornado teams will host the regional tournament competition on May 10-11.
Times will be announced at a later date.
