SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center plans to offer displays of about 300 objects from the doomed luxury liner Titanic in September.
The Times reports (http://bit.ly/HHhIwC) the artifacts are coming to Sci-Port as part of a 5,500-item collection amassed by Premier Exhibitions. The science center staff doesn’t know yet what items will be displayed in Shreveport.
Curators with the company select objects based on what’s available. The collection includes items from the ship like china and personal objects like luggage and clothing.
“It’s been in the works since we knew we were going to bring Bodies,” said Jennifer McMenamin, Sci-Port development director.
Sci-Port will create hands-on science programs about Morse code, mapping and artifact preservation for the exhibit, as well as working exhibit-themed segments into regular fall programming, said Karen Wissing, Sci-Port marketing manager. There also will be several special events, including a “Love Boat”-themed singles mixer and a dinner featuring the last meal served on Titanic.
“There will be a few adults-only events and some family-type ones,” Wissing said. “People should expect some surprise twists with this exhibit.” Published in The Messenger 4.18.12
