A second round of budget hearings will be held Tuesday night as work continues on Obion County’s budget for the next fiscal year.
The Obion County Budget Committee will meet at 6 p.m. at the courthouse.
Tuesday night’s budget hearing will focus on receiving budget requests from all of the county’s elected officials and department heads, as well as the library.
A first round of budget hearings a week ago allowed the committee to receive budget requests from several non-profit agencies throughout the area. They will be carefully considered as the seven-member committee goes through the county’s budget process for the 2012-13 fiscal year.
The seven members of the Obion County Budget Committee are county commissioners Danny Jowers, Sam Sinclair Jr., Ralph Puckett, Jerry Grady, Allen Nohsey, Terry Roberts and Richard Arnold. Currently, Jowers serves as committee chairman and Sinclair as vice chairman.
At the first hearing last week, Jowers pledged that commissioners will look at each funding request “in a fair and honest way” as they consider them for a proposed budget to be presented to the full county commission for approval.
Additional hearings will likely be scheduled in the coming weeks as the budget committee works toward drafting Obion County’s budget for the 2012-13 fiscal year. The county school system’s budget is still pending and is among those which will have to be presented in the near future.
Obion County Mayor Benny McGuire said the budget needs to be in place by July 1, although cities and counties actually have a grace period which gives them until Sept. 1 to adopt a budget plan.
The budget must be approved by the Obion County Commission, which does not meet in April and will next convene in May and June. McGuire said a proposed budget will hopefully be presented to the 21-member commission in June.
