| Union City’s girls stayed on course. The Golden Tornado boys got back on track. UC’s tennis teams combined to win 13 of their 14 matches against Westview for a pair of team wins Thursday afternoon at the Middle School courts. Union City posted a 7-0 win in girls’ play and a 6-1 verdict in girls’ action. While the Tornadoes were winning, Obion Central was losing to Crockett County. The Cavaliers swept through the girls’ matches and won 10 of the 13 matches overall for a pair of wins over Obion Central at the Fairgrounds courts. The Lady Rebels dropped a 6-1 decision, while the OC boys suffered a 4-2 setback. As has been the case much of the season for the Lady Twisters, Maddie King, Anna Moore, Jenna Miller and Tara Elam all were involved in two wins each. They each won in singles play, claiming the top four seeds, and then paired off for doubles wins. King claimed an 8-4 decision over Melissa Darroch at No. 1, and Miller topped Natalie Hurst 8-1 at No. 3. King and Miller then beat Hurst and Carlie Vowell at No. 2 in doubles. Moore knocked off Laura Ferrer 8-1 at No. 2, while Elam bettered Vowell 8-2 at the fourth spot. The UC duo won 8-0 over Darroch and Ferrerh. Ellen Bearden completed the shutout team win with an 8-1 win over Jasmine Evans at No. 5 in singles. Jacob Triplett and Devin King won twice in boys’ play, each with a singles win and then teaming up for a doubles triumph. Triplett topped Gian Garma 8-1, King defeated Connor Blanchard 8-5 and the UC pair blanked Garma and Ethan Plunk 8-0. Peyton Cox, Alex Pegram and Ellis Critchlow also won their singles matches. Despite being a bad day as a whole for Central, Austin Riley had a good outing by being part of two wins. Riley shut out Ryan Harber 8-0 in their No. 2 seed singles match, and he teamed with Dallas Mathis for an 8-5 win over Harber and Gunter McCrae. Obion Central’s only other win came at the girls’ No. 2 doubles spot as Taylor Moore and Mallori Conley defeated Rachel Smith and Tonya Perez 8-4. Published in The Messenger 4.13.12 | | | |
