Sports Briefs Posted: Friday, April 13, 2012 12:00 pm UTM finishes 3rd in recent tournament The UT Martin golf team finished third in the 20th annual Grub Mart Intercollegiate after posting the best team score in the third round of the tournament played Tuesday at Silver Lakes Golf Course in Jacksonville, Ala. The Skyhawks shot a 298 in the third round, 10 strokes better than their second round score, and jumped from seventh to third. Jacksonville State won with an 897, while Eastern Kentucky was second with a 909. UT Martin was third with a three-round 922. Freshman Brandon Caballero fired the lowest score of the third round for the Skyhawks. He shot 3-under par 69. He had a three-round 230 and finished tied for 14th in the tournament. UT Martin sophomore John Michael Sisinni wrapped up the tournament with a 3-over par 75. Sisinni, from Olive Branch, Miss., shot a three-round 225 and finished tied for fourth in the tournament. Rounding out the UT Martin team was Taylor Deming, who shot a three-round 234, while Christopher Schwartz shot a three-round 235. Clay Harbin turned in a three-round 251. Skyhawk softball date for student-athletes The UT Martin softball team will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Bettye Giles Field as the athletics department celebrates Student-Athlete Day. The softball game was previously scheduled as a doubleheader. UT Martin takes run along SEMO course The UT Martin cross country team traveled to Cape Girardeau, Mo., last weekend, taking part in the Joey Haines Invite. In the women’s 5,000 meter run, Amanda Wardlaw (18:43.40) and Samantha Hunt (20:53.33) slotted back-to-back finishes. Emily Jones finished with a time of 5:30.55 in the women’s 1,500 meters. A slew of Skyhawks competed in the men’s 5,000 meter run, led by Tallon Scott (16:01.71). Benji Sparks and Jimmy Watkins-Lynch posted final times of 16:35.63 and 16:38.82, respectively, followed by Cody Lemmons (16:59.10). Four more UT Martin runners placed in the men’s 1,500 meter run event. Adam Merook (4:09.54) and Vance Pounders (4:09.87) finished less than a second of each other, while Ryan Pett and Josiah Roberts recorded times of 4:16.51 and 4:26.50, respectively. Merook led four Skyhawks in the men’s 800 meter run with his time of 2:00.66. Following closely was Pounders (2:01.46), Pett (2:03.24) and Roberts (2:11.87).
