Skyhawks’ home finale nets a loss

The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team ran into a hot Southern Illinois team Tuesday at Skyhawk Varsity Courts, falling 6-1 on Senior Day.
After a pregame ceremony honoring the lone senior Jodie Tiley, the Skyhawks (7-10) battled hard in doubles before falling 2-1.
Alice Laing and Anna Winkelmann came back from a 6-2 deficit to post an 8-6 triumph at No. 2.
UT Martin was competitive throughout the singles competition, managing one win against the Salukis (13-4).
Anna Marie Herbold came away victorious at No. 4 singles, downing Ariadna Cairo Baza by a 6-3, 6-4 margin.
Despite the loss, the day belonged to Tiley, who wrapped up her stellar home career.
“It was a good day for Jodie, and she did well,” UT Martin head coach Dennis Taylor said. “I wish she could have won her last match, but she faced a real tough girl in singles. Everybody showed how much they appreciated her throughout the day and that meant a lot to her.”
While all the singles matches were decided in straight sets, UTM posted a stiff challenge in several spots.
Winkelmann, at No. 2, and third seed Ivon Simic looked poised to force a third set before falling 7-5 to Jennifer Dien and Natasha Tomishima, respectively.
The Skyhawks, currently in second place by a game in the Ohio Valley Conference standings, conclude the regular season this weekend on the road.
On Saturday, UT Martin travels to SIU Edwardsville, followed by a matchup at Eastern Illinois on Sunday.
