A Troy woman told police her purse was snatched Thursday while she was shopping at a Union City store.
The incident occurred about 11:45 a.m. at Dollar General at 1449 South First St., where Melanie D. Smith of Troy told police her purse was stolen from her shopping cart, according to a Union City Police Department report.
The purse apparently had been placed in the buggy’s upper child seating compartment. Ms. Smith told police she walked away from her purse for a few minutes and she discovered the purse was missing when she got to the store checkout area.
The purse is tan with a brown strap and contained a wallet with a checkbook, cash, Ms. Smith’s driver’s license, her Social Security, insurance and food stamp cards, four prescription medications and a gold ring, as well as Ms. Smith’s daughter’s Social Security and TennCare cards, according to the report.
Police caution shoppers never to leave their valuables, particularly purses, unattended in carts while shopping and to be aware of their surroundings.
