| This time, Union City had the big inning late. |
Union City broke open a tight game with six runs in the bottom of the sixth to rout Obion Central 10-1 at UC’s Eddlemon Hawks Field Wednesday afternoon.
Both teams came into the game having played six games in the previous seven days
OC overcame a seven-run first inning when the two teams met at Troy earlier in the season, winning 11-9.
The Lady Twisters never relinquished their lead this time, however.
In fact, Union City spent the final innings expanding its margin.
UC jumped out front early with a pair of runs in the first inning as Kaitlyn Wheeles and Sadie Hollis reached base and later scored when Tory Reedy’s ground ball was thrown around the infield.
After stranding Rachel Jones at third base in the first frame, Central put two runners in scoring position in the second frame and got a two-out baserunner in both the third and fourth frames only to come up empty. UC, meanwhile, also stranded runners in the third and fourth frames.
Central put its first two batters on in the fifth and eventually loaded the bases with its only run scoring on a sacrifice ground-ball out.
Bettye Claire Beachum gave the Lady Twisters some breathing room in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run double that scored Wheeles and Hollis. Wheeles doubled to open the inning and then Hollis followed with a single.
Brittany Parker, who reached on a bunt to load the bases, was out at third when she was called safe but unable to stay on the bag after a relay throw was too late.
The Lady Tornadoes then blew it open in the sixth with six runs.
Hollis singled four times, scoring three times and driving in a run to lead UC’s offensive attack. Ashley Faught had three hits, Beachum doubled, singled and drove in three runs and Parker had two hits with a run and an RBI. Both Wheeles and Reedy doubled, Wheeles scoring three times and knocking in a run and Reedy scoring once and driving in three.
Hollis went the distance for the win, striking out three and walking one.
Jones, Kayla Bramlett, Megan Gargus and Calli Johnson all had a hit for the Lady Rebs.
Baylie Boucher suffered the loss, striking out two and walking one.
OC, now 21-7, celebrates Senior Night today against Ripley, while Union City (9-7) travels to Halls. Other local action today has South Fulton hosting Trenton.
Today’s baseball schedule has UC hosting Henry County, Central at home against Gosnell (Ark.) and South Fulton opening three days of play in the Caleb Turner Classic at home against Fulton City at 4 p.m. Published in the Messenger 4.12.12
