Skyhawks’ Bain adds league honor to week’s work Posted: Wednesday, April 11, 2012 12:00 pm UT Martin senior Jenny Bain was named the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Softball Player of the Week on Monday by league officials in Brentwood. The Skyhawk shortstop had a least one hit in each of the team’s five games this past week. She had four RBI and a double in the doubleheader sweep at Austin Peay this past Wednesday. UTM defeated the Governors 7-3 and 5-4 She opened the Eastern Kentucky series Friday afternoon with two home runs and four more RBI, which accounted for all of UTM’s offense. Bain’s three-run shot in the sixth put the Skyhawks ahead after Eastern had taken a 2-1 lead. With the five games this past week, Bain has now started and played in 218 consecutive games for the Skyhawks. She now has 36 career home runs and 148 career RBI, both rank first on UT Martin’s all-time list. The Skyhawks swept the Friday doubleheader 4-2 and 7-3 before losing Saturday’s game 7-2. Lauren Smith had a big effort at the plate in Friday’s second game, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. She tagged a two-run homer in the first inning. Smth and Leah Taylor had solo home runs for UT Martin on Saturday. This is the second time this season that Bain has been named the league’s player of the week. The Hendersonville native also earned the accolade Feb. 13 for her effort the first week of the season. The Skyhawks went 4-1 this past week and return to action today when they play in Carbondale, Ill., at SIU. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m. The Skyhawks return home Thursday when they host Austin Peay in an OVC tilt at Bettye Giles Field.
